Summer hasn’t really been summering yet here in Sweden, so I’ve been reminiscing about past summer adventures instead.
Especially the ones I spent in:
Gotland.
Visby’s Fort(une)
Gotland is an island just off the coast of Sweden, and its city center — Visby — has preserved a lot of its medieval charm.
In fact, Visby is one of the oldest cities in the Nordics and used to be a major trading hub during medieval times.
It was also the site of civil wars, and its location made it especially vulnerable to attacks from the sea.
So they built a fort around it.
Inside the fort
Walking inside the fort was an interesting experience, not to mention a little eerie.
The corridors weren’t exactly spacious, but they were airy and had wall openings for windows.
The stairways, however:
Narrow and claustrophobic.
The steps were also uneven, so you had to watch your footing unless you wanted to make friends with a few broken bones.
But I’m not complaining.
Walking through the fort made me feel like I’d traveled to a different time and kind of lived in it for a few minutes, just like the people who once walked those same halls.
Rauk Solid Beauty
Say hello to this fancy lady.
I don’t know if she’s sleeping or meditating, but I guess being at the beach all the time will do that to you.
And believe it or not, she used to be a cliff!
Over time, wind and water eroded the softer parts of the cliff, slowly shaping it into this statue-like formation called a:
Rauk.
And she’s not alone.
Gotland has plenty of rauks scattered across the island. This lady even has some siblings nearby, though they may not look as fancy as she does.
Or even human.
Beach Please
Since Gotland is an island, there are plenty of beaches!

And look at the water!
Amazing, right?
You can actually get those last two photos as phone wallpapers!

These shots really capture the spirit of summer in Gotland. So yeah, you could definitely say summer was summering there.
What about your summer?
How do you usually spend it?
And which one do you always look back on and reminisce about?
I want to hear all about it in the comments 👇🏽
